Sattvic foods are those which can be obtained without harming any organism or one’s self. These foods are considered very pure in Hinduism and are also offered to Hindu gods. Water, vegetables, cereal grains, fruits, unpasteurized and unhomogenized fresh milk, and nuts are examples of Sattvic foods.

The concept of sattvic food in Hinduism

There are also other food types in Hinduism such as Tamasic and Rajasic; Tamasic foods are those which have sedative effects on the mind and body. In Hinduism, they are considered detrimental foods and according to yoga, these foods should be avoided as they are the reasons for numbness and mental dullness whereas Rajasic foods are neither beneficial nor harmful.

These foods lead to aggressiveness and irritability. Caffeinated drinks, brown or black chocolate, and overly spicy foods are included in Rajasic foods.
