First time in the history, the two women’s enter the Sabarimala temple in Kerala. The women break the 800 years of the record of women’s ban in the Sabarimala temple. The Bindu and Kanaka Durga are the first women’s who walked into the Sabarimala temple. They were the first women’s to do so since the Supreme Court ordered the end of the decade-old ban on women of menstrual age for entering the shrine.
The temple is shut down for the ritual “purification” before reopening to devotees.
The women devotees enter the temple around the 3:45 am, these both women are in their early 40s, the police provide the full protection to them. A group of protesters also seen on the spot who are protesting against the women who appears in the temple.
These women had made the abortive attempt once before to trek the temple. Both women tried to enter the temple before but stopped by the protesters.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed the visit and tell the media “It is a fact that the women entered the shrine.” Further, he added that police force is bound to offer full protection to anyone wanting to worship at the shrine.
Human chain- The Protest of Women for gender discrimination
On Tuesday, more than tens of thousands of women formed a human chain across Kerala to back the demand for women’s access to the temple. The Supreme Court had said that hearing of a legal challenge to its ruling will start on January 22. The women formed the 620km-long human chain in the protest of gender discrimination.
The entry of the female devotees of the menstruating age into the 800-year old shrine has been barred in line with the traditional belief that Lord Ayhyappa is a celibate.
Protest by the organization and the “Black Day” of Kerala
Sabarimala karma Samiti, the Hindu organization umbrella called the shutdown strike on Thursday in Kerala.
The protest broke in the state after the entry of the women and Protesters blocked highways with the forced closure of shops and markets in various parts the state. The Journalists were allegedly attacked by BJP workers who was reporting from outside the secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram. The Congress-led UDF is observing it as a “black day” and the BJP is supporting the Sabarimala Karma Samithi shutdown. A man died on Wednesday late last night.
