Gill made his first-class debut for Punjab in November 2017 against Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. He made an impressive start to his career by scoring a century on his debut. He went on to score 1297 runs in his debut season at an average of 69.84. His performance in the 2018 U-19 World Cup was also outstanding, where he scored 372 runs in six matches at an average of 124.

In January 2019, Gill was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for INR 1.8 crores in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. He didn’t get many opportunities in his first season but made an impact in the 2020 season, where he scored 440 runs in 14 matches at an average of 33.84.
